As members and attendees to the annual Association of California Airports (ACA) conference are aware, Michael A. Shutt was a large contributor to ACA for many years. His passion for the growth of general aviation and development of California Airports was evident in his selfless support to the association.  Mike was an influential aviation consultant for more than 35 years. Those that had the opportunity to interact with Mike knew him as a gentleman and gifted professional who helped shape the airport consulting industry that exists today.

The board has recognized Mike’s years of participation and passion and will honor his contributions by presenting a Michael A. Shutt Award each year at the ACA conference. Anyone can nominate an individual or organization for the award. Nominations for the annual award will be received by the Michael A. Shutt review panel who will evaluate all of the nominees against the evaluation criteria and make a selection for the award. The award will be presented at the annual ACA Conference.

The 2019 Michael A. Shutt Award was presented to Carol Ford.  Carol took her first ride in a small plane when she was 12 years old and has been hooked on flying ever since.  She originally took lessons at Phoenix Field in Fair Oaks, California, and earned her Private Pilot Certificate.  Phoenix Field is now a housing development.  Carol later moved to Fremont and flew out of the small Airport along the bay which is also now closed.  When she moved to Redwood Shores, under the pattern of San Carlos Airport, she was determined that would not happen to other airports.

Carol continues work to work with airports.  She was awarded Airport Defender of the Year by the California Pilots Association in 1997.  She now serves as President of CalPilots; a Director of the CalPilots/ACA Political Action Committee; AOPA representative for San Carlos Airport;  President of the San Carlos Airport Association;  and Past Chapter Chairperson, International Organization of Licensed Women Pilots.  Carol has also founded Ford Aviation Consultants, now Ford & Associates LLC, dedicated to ensuring airports receive funding they deserve.  Carol has been a member of ACA for a number of years and has been instrumental in the development of the annual California Aviation Day event.
